Bridging Generations with Tech

Digital Literacy for All

ROOTS Blog — Episode 5

One of my favorite memories at ROOTS was when we taught an elder how to send her very first email. At first she was nervous, but when she finally pressed "send," she smiled and said, "I didn't know I could do this."

That moment showed me that technology isn't just about devices. It's about dignity, freedom, and connection.

The Digital Divide is Real

A lot of immigrant families and elders feel left out when it comes to technology. The challenges are real:

  • Some face language barriers that make it hard to use apps
  • Many deal with fear of making mistakes
  • Others simply don't have someone patient enough to guide them

At ROOTS, we see digital literacy as a right, not just a skill. That's why we launched the ROOTS Tech Empowerment Initiative.

ROOTS Tech Empowerment Initiative

Through this program, we offer:

Computer 101 Classes

Beginner-friendly lessons that start from the basics and build confidence with technology.

Safety and Email Basics

Learn how to communicate confidently and securely online, from sending emails to spotting scams.

Social Apps Guidance

Stay connected with loved ones through video calls, messaging, and social media platforms.

Tech Tutoring Sessions

Youth teach elders, parents, and new immigrants in one-on-one or small group settings.

Stories That Inspire Us

I've seen incredible stories come out of this program. A student once taught her grandfather how to join Zoom, and for the first time, he joined a family reunion online. He told us it made him feel like part of the family again. That one small skill changed his entire outlook.

Simple Tips to Get Started

If you're wondering how to start helping someone with tech, here are a few simple tips:

1

Learn how to reset passwords

It helps with most tech frustrations and empowers people to solve common issues independently.

2

Be careful with unknown links

Avoid scams by teaching how to identify suspicious messages and links before clicking.

3

Be patient

With yourself if you're learning, and with others if you're teaching. Progress takes time.

A Challenge for You

Think about someone in your life who could benefit from learning a new digital skill. It could be your parents, your neighbor, or even a friend. Offering that support could change more than you realize.

At ROOTS, we believe that when we teach tech, we're not just teaching tools. We're teaching freedom.

Coming Up Next

Our next episode will be all about serving from the heart and why volunteerism is one of the strongest forces for change in our community.

ROOTS Shoutout

Huge appreciation to all our youth tech tutors who volunteer their time to empower elders and families. Your patience and kindness are changing lives!
