Serving from the Heart
The Power of Volunteerism
ROOTS Blog — Episode 6
By Jumobi, Founder
The very first time I volunteered, I was helping pack food kits for families in need. I didn't know what to expect, and I wondered if my small effort would even make a difference. But by the end of the day, I realized that service wasn't just about helping others—it was shaping me too.
I felt stronger, more connected, and more inspired than I ever had before. That's why volunteerism is such an important part of ROOTS.
Community First
We believe in "Community First," and service is one of the best ways to live that out. Over the years, ROOTS has led so many youth-centered service projects, like:
- Creating care kits for families
- Hosting CPR outreach and safety awareness events
- Organizing neighborhood cleanups
- Providing tutoring and mentorship to students
- Supporting event logistics for cultural and community gatherings
The Impact of Service
Every project has left a mark. I've seen members discover confidence, empathy, and purpose just by showing up to serve. Parents and elders often tell us that watching youth volunteer gives them hope for the future. Those words keep me motivated every day.
Small Actions Count Too
What I love about service is that it doesn't have to be big. Small actions count too. For example:
Academic Support
Helping a classmate with schoolwork can make a huge difference in their understanding and confidence.
Elder Connection
Visiting a neighbor and listening to their stories can combat loneliness and build community bonds.
Community Drives
Donating to a local drive, whether it's food, clothing, or school supplies, supports those in need.
Event Support
Offering to help set up or clean up at an event shows commitment and makes events run smoothly.
It's the little acts of kindness that create lasting change.
Your Personal Challenge
So here's something for you to try: think of one small way you can serve this week. Maybe write it down and make it your personal challenge. You'll be surprised at how something so small can make such a big impact.
At ROOTS, we always remind ourselves—you don't need a title to make a difference. You just need a willing heart.
Leading Through Service
Together, we're proving that youth can lead through service, compassion, and action. Every volunteer hour, every kind word, every small gesture adds up to create transformative change in our communities.
ROOTS Shoutout
A huge thank you to all our ROOTS volunteers who show up consistently with energy and heart. You are the backbone of our community programs, and your dedication inspires everyone around you!
Reflection Prompt
What's one act of service you can commit to this week? Write it down and share your experience with us at roots.org25@gmail.com. We'd love to celebrate your impact!
